Commissioner Patrick Hooker, Chairman of the NYS Council on Food Policy gave a presentation to the annual Applied Research and Extension Program Council Conference on March 10th in Ithaca where he stressed that "promoting local fresh foods is smart policy, not just because it will help farmers' bottom lines at a time when many small farmers, in particular, are struggling, but also because it will improve family nutrition".
Following Commissioner Hooker’s presentation the audience broke into four areas for round table discussions, each led by Council on Food Policy members or representatives.

NYS Council on Food Policy member, John Evers received feedback from the Program Council members during the round table discussion focusing on food and nutrition assistance programs in New York State.

NYS Council on Food Policy members Raymond Denniston and Diane Eggert led the round table discussion focusing on ways to strengthen the "consumer-local food" connection such as "buy local" campaigns, farmers' markets, and farm-to-school efforts.
